Metro Football League
The Metro Football League (formerly known as the Mercantile Football Association) is one of two community based football leagues based in Perth, Western Australia. The league is made up from 13 clubs, 16 teams and over 1200 registered players.〔(Community football is kicking off )〕
It had its origins as a Sunday social league playing fortnightly in the 80s. Some of the clubs were Cockburn Cement, Komatsu and the Rosemount Hotel. The enhancement of the clubs structure along with a change in the Associations administration meant a more formalised competition being instituted.
New clubs joining had more of a community base, rather than social or workplace, with some of those being: Quinns, Ellenbrook and Midvale. Kingsway and Kwinana are clubs with a long established history and the Midland FC is one of only a few clubs in Perth that are over a hundred years old.
The Mercantile has its own independent Board, P & D and accredited panel umpires, joined the CFC in 2007 with its clerical administration done through the CFO and as understood is the only incorporated metropolitan senior Sunday football league in Australia.
The league made headlines in 2009 when former Richmond AFL player Andrew Krakouer, imprisoned for assault, played for the Wooroloo Prison football team whilst serving his sentence. The Wooroloo team went through the season undefeated, although with some complaints for rough play and intimidation of the opposition.〔(Andrew Krakouer's Woorooloo Prison team wins grand final ); PerthNow; 20 September 2009〕
The 2010 season saw the Kwinana Knights claim both the League and Reserves premierships. This is the first time a club has won both grand finals in the Mercantile Football League in the same year.
